Graphic Organizers with Depth and Complexity - ALL EDITABLE!

Hello Friends.

Have you heard about Thinking Maps? A few years ago, my principal sent some of the staff to be trained in using Thinking Maps and I have LOVED using them ever since. If you are unfamiliar with what it is, I can explain.. because I'm your friend and that's what friends do. :)  Our brain usually organizes information in 8 different ways. These thinking skills help kids drive their learning and as they move through each grade, it is done with greater complexity. There are 8 different Thinking Maps. These maps are used to help students organize information in what they are learning. What I love about it is that it is easy and simple in the lower grades and can get more complex in the higher grades. I even find myself using them ALL the time to organize my to do lists, reflect on things that I've read, etc.

NOW... just to kick it up a notch, I've added Depth and Complexity icons to some of the maps. I've gone to Sandra Kaplan's (creator of Depth and Complexity) seminars and have learned SO much on teaching not only gifted students, but ALL students.

I teach a 1/2 combo this year and was a bit worried about integrating Thinking Maps and Depth and Complexity (D&C) into my class. I didn't know how it was going to look like doing it a 2 different levels.  Once I began teaching it, my students caught on and now LOVE using Thinking Maps to organize their learning and D&C to dig a little A LOT deeper.

I know that I've had a lot of people (some I know, most I don't) pinning my Thinking Maps on Pinterest. I realized that there are many teachers out there just like me looking for ways to improve their teaching while challenging their students. This led me to create my Graphic Organizers with Depth and Complexity unit. I am SO excited for this resource because I use them in my class ALL.THE.TIME!

I use these for my interactive notebooks, too. I have students fill out their maps and then fold it in half and glue into their journals. Voila! DONE and EASY! :)

Here is a sneak peak at this Print and Go unit...because this time of year... I need "easy". I NEED Print and Go! I need an "All In One" resource.

I used the Circle Map and combine it with a D&C icon to kick up their learning a notch.

Brace Map. My kids love this activity! I will sometimes give them the whole and they have to list the parts OR I play a game where I list the parts, and they have to guess the whole. :)

Bubble Map with D&C icons and text dependent answers. It was AMAZING to see my Firsties doing this!!! :)

Flow Map. There are a couple organizers for writing.  There's even a sample for you. ;)

I LOVE LOVE using these maps for all types of learning. One of the ways I mostly use them for is for my comprehension skills. Here are some:

Again, SO many uses for these maps. Here I used them for grammar skills.

You can even use 2 maps. This is another way that I use them in my classroom. We do this EVERY week. Circle Map to Tree Map.

They brainstorm some phonics sound. Here we were doing Long o and Long u.

Now we categorize it into a tree map. Soon, kids do their own tree map from the information on their circle map. It's AH-MAZING to see them take ownership of their learning!

Here is it with a grammar skill:

Did I tell you that each of the 8 maps come with samples so that you know how to use them??:) I';m a visual learner and sometimes I just need to SEE what it's suppose to look like.

Here is the whole resource. Over 100 pages!!! ALL EDITABLE!!

Seriously Friends, what are you waiting for???  It really will bring your kids to the next level and in no time at all, they will be filling out these maps on their own! For reals! I'm married to a pastor so I wouldn't lie to you. :)

Blessings,
Angela

Five for Friday

It's been a while Friends!

Today I am linking up with Doodle Bugs for her Five for Friday linky party.

I've been working on Depth and Complexity with my students and it has really taken their learning to the next level. Over the past couple of years, I've been going to USC to learn about teaching gifted students from Sandra Kaplan, the creator of Depth and Complexity. The truth is, these strategies work for ALL students and allows them to understand the content much better. My students actually love it!

We just had Open House not too long ago and it was so much fun! Here are some things from my Open House Unit  on TPT.  I've compiled 19 things over my 15 years of teaching that I love to do. It comes complete with templates and detailed instructions. If you need some new projects for your classroom, I'd love for you to come by and check it out.

Here are some pictures from my class:

This is always a hit with my class! This picture was from my last year's class. I ran out of time and had to make my own Senior Citizen's Home sign. I was desperate. Don't judge.

A closer look ...

Our class read Moses Goes to a Concert. They loved learning about sign language and so I took pictures of their hands making the alphabet. We even had a "secret message" board done in sign language that the parents had to figure out what it said. A hit for sure!! :)

This is my Line of Symmetry activity. The kids loved it and it was neat to see some of my students' artistic ability.

This girl was amazing!!!
On the other side of the symmetry picture, they wrote 10 things that they loved about themselves. I also had a surprise for my students under this sheet. I secretly sent home a sheet for their parents to fill out "10 Things I Love About YOU!", then I stapled it under this paper. Parents got to show their child their "surprise" when they came that night. Sorry that I don't have a picture of that sheet, but it's in the Open House unit.

Students made invitations for their parents to come to Open House.

This is one of the class favs! The silhouette wall! I have an EASY PEASY tutorial in the unit on how to do this WITHOUT tracing.  Praise the Lord for not making the kids stand still in front of the projector like I used to do.

Here is my unit if anyone is interested in creating MORE fun projects for their classroom.

Since summer is coming, I've been trying to work out more and eat right. I've started Kayla Itsines BBG workout and I love it.  You have got to check out her Instagram or her Facebook page to see these amazing results. She has a huge community of REAL girls that have used her program and share some helpful tips and their results. AH-MAZING!!! I've been staying of track. It's only week 2 but I've been resisting my temptation to eat all things chocolately this week. Yay for me!!!

I LOVE good food. I ate at the yummiest place in Orange County this past week. It was called True Food Kitchen.  The place has a very clean look to it and is decorated with succulents. It really is a farm to table type of place...AND it's HEALTHY!!!

This was my delicious salad!

I saved the most exciting news for last....

(said in best scream voice..)

ONLY A COUPLE MORE WEEKS OF SCHOOL LEEEEEFT!!!!! :)

Have a wonderful Friday, Friends and thanks for reading!

Blessings,
